This summer marked a turning point for me as I embarked on a new adventure: stepping into the shoes of substitute teachers. After applying, I dove into this journey just this week. Reflecting on my first two days, I’ve come to realize that subbing is both demanding and incredibly enjoyable. What’s intriguing is my decision to teach across various grade levels.

These past couple of days have transported me back to my own school days, evoking memories of who we were as children. Back then, we couldn’t fathom where these experiences would lead us, both in the near and distant future.

Last two days has taken me to elementary and middle school levels, uncovering unique dynamics within each grade, gender, culture, and school itself. Particularly impressive is the seamless functioning of the school system, from the start of the day to the organized dismissal process. Thousands of students are efficiently dismissed within half an hour. The teachers exhibit an inspiring display of teamwork, organization, determination, and dedication for the children. They’ve chosen a path to guide these young minds, and the effort they invest in preparing for their students is truly remarkable.

I’m reminded of my education in India, realizing anew that education is a privilege. Our parents’ decision to leave behind their village for our sake brought us a world of new experiences during our childhood. Witnessing these differences while embracing shared principles that drive these educational systems is both enlightening and exhilarating.

While I’m aware that my journey has only just begun – a mere two days in – I can’t contain my excitement. I’m compelled to share this thrill with colleagues in the corporate realm. I encourage everyone to consider giving teaching a shot, as a novel endeavor to gain insight into the life of a teacher. Let’s empathize with the daily experiences of students, perhaps forgotten after years of progressing beyond grade school. Their challenges, joys, and growth offer a unique perspective.

In essence, the educational environment for kids in the United States is nothing short of beautiful. It equips them to tackle an uncertain future with a mindset geared towards solving global challenges, much like the youth and world challenges discovered during the ‘Voice of the Youth’ Worldreels project. I extend an invitation to all to contemplate taking the plunge. It’s worth trying, and who knows what you might discover!
