I am very grateful to both Google maps and Apple maps for being my support system during my by-road travel across the country. I have now driven over 4500km (2800miles) with exploring more than 10 cities in India. Given the overall length/size of the journey, a few wrong routes are not bad as far an anomaly, of only 3 times out of several routes, statistically and a game of numbers is concerned. But the dissatisfaction and inconvenience it causes, after a long day of travel is concerned, its affect on our state of mind is more than that of a good experience.
This has now happened three times (Jaipur, Alwar, and now in Bangalore) that the Apple maps & Google maps has taken us to either narrow streets not for car driving or a road that is not accessible at all. Getting lost in India costs you good number of hours in lost time and if it is night time then it is worst, given the anguish it causes.
Last night was just that experience in the streets of Bangalore when I was routed to a street just not fit for cars and took good half hour traversing the roads to find another street where we could actually drive our car on a road just wide enough to drive.
While I was driving, people on the streets on foot, in two-wheelers, in autos thought who is this lady driving on our streets with the license plate of Uttar Pradesh. While I did not lose my cool, I definitely was bothered by the fact that why the directions are not reliable. And the cause of agony they create for all the ones affected, the co-passengers as well as those on the streets having to experience a big vehicle on what is their everyday street.
Again, our country in India is so huge, as well as ancient, that having these experiences is only bound to happen. But then city planning in new towns and streets can definitely be better!
